WHERE DID THEY LIVE? They lived in the Southern Mississippi and southwestern Alabama.

FOOD/HUNTING Techniques Corn, beans and pumpkins, green corn fruit, and nuts and some plants. The Choctaw children helped plant and gather them. Choctaw men were hunters and sometimes went to war to protect their families.

SHELTER The houses were a cluster of houses made from wood frames covered in mud. The roofs were grass or cane and reeds.

GOVERNMENT The Choctaw Indians were the first to exchange their land with the U.S. government.

RELIGION The Choctaw maintain a faith in supernatural forces linking humans and other creatures.

RITUALS/CEREMONIES Green corn ceremony - ceremony of thanksgiving that occurred during summer. Head flattening - attach a board to male infants’ head Fire rituals - A priest would light a now fire symbolizing a new year.

UNIQUE FACTS They were know mound builders. population was 12,000, they lived in present-day Sumter, Choctaw and Washington counties.
