1
Insect bad guys! You’ll never look at a bug the same.
2
Anatomy 3 pairs=6 legs 3 Body parts
3
Life Cycle-Insect Metamorphosis Complete –Egg –Larva (worms/catepillars) –Pupa (relatively dormnant) –Adult (flies, beetles, etc.) Incomplete –Egg –Nymph early-no wings Late-wings developing –Adult
4
*Insects must be killed when they are actively feeding or moving on the plant.

Incomplete Metamorphosis
7
Damage Damage depends on the type of mouthpart Chewing-tear, chew or grind food Sucking: –Piercing: punctures plant and suck sap –Rasping: rasps or break surface and suck sap.
8
Damage Siphoning: have a coiled tube they dip into liquid food such as nectar and draw it in (ex. Butterfly) Sponging: have two sponge-like structures that collect liquid food and move it into the food canal. (ex. House fly)
9
Insect mouthparts
10
Chewing Tear, chew or grind food Controlled by stomach poisons
11
Chewing- Beetles Eat leaves Stems Flowers Fruits Nuts
12
Beetles
13
Chewing- Cutworms Usually attacks stems May eat other plants
14
Cutworms: The larvae or caterpillars of some moths are called cutworms (Agrotis, Amathes, Peridroma, Prodenia spp.) because of the manner in which they cut down young plants as they feed.
15
Chewing- Caterpillars Larva of Moths & Butterflies Fuzzy and hairy Eat young leaves and stems Roll up in leaves, makes leaves curl
16
Caterpillars
17
Chewing- Grasshoppers Eat all parts of plants
18
Grasshopper
19
Chewing- Bagworm Attack during larvae stage Leave brown spots on upper epidermis Eat entire leaves on older plants
20
Bagworm
21
Sucking Puncturing the surface to take out the sap of a plant or other animal. Controlled by systemic control

23
Sucking- Aphids Pierce and suck juices Plant lice Cause stunted growth, yellow spotted leaves Sticky substance and black mold Attracts ants
24
Aphids
25
Sucking- Leaf Bugs Causes plants to look unhealthy Lose normal color and wilt
26
Sucking- Mealy Bugs Pierce and suck from underside of leaves Suck in leaf axils Causes yellow appearance Sticky secretions
27
Mealy bug
28
Sucking- Thrips Chews and then sucks Causes plant tissue to become speckled or whitened Leaf tip withers Leaf curls and dies
29
Thrips
30
Sucking- Whiteflies Feeds on underside of young leaves Little flying white specks when plants are shaken
31
White flies
32
Sucking- Lace Bug Suck on underneath side but damage is noticed on upper part of the leaf as large yellow spots
33
Lace Bug
34
Sucking-Scale Suck juices from stems and other parts of the plant Cause plant as a whole to look unhealthy and stop growing Secretes honeydew that attracts the fungus, sooty mold Mealy bugs are a type of scale
35
Scale
36
Sucking- Mites (Watch Out it isn’t an insect) Attack underside of leaf Causes leaves to turn gray to grayish Severe infestations cause webbing Insects can be red Controlled by a miticide
37
Mites
38
cankerworms
