3
Main Idea/Vocabulary I will compare decimals. equivalent decimals
4
Example 1 Expanded Form Roano ran 1.68 miles. Wangari ran 1.50 miles. Who ran the longer distance? One Way: Use a number line. Numbers to the right are greater than numbers to the left. Since 1.68 is to the right of 1.50, 1.68 > 1.50.
5
Example 1 Compare Decimals Another Way: Use place value. Line up the decimal points. Compare the digits in the greatest place. Continue comparing until the digits are different. 1.50 1.68 1.50 1.68 1.50 1.68 The ones digits are the same. In the tenths place, 5 < 6. So, 1.50 < 1.68.
6
Example 1 Compare Decimals Answer: So, Roano ran the longer distance.

1.A 2.B 3.C Example 1 A.Melinda B.Fredrick C.Both walk the same distance. Melinda walks 2.25 miles to work and Fredrick walks 2.47 miles to work. Who walks the longer distance to work?

Example 2 Compare Decimals Replace with, or = to make 0.730 0.73 a true sentence. 0.730 = 0.730 Annex a zero. The value does not change. Answer: So, 0.730 = 0.73.

1.A 2.B 3.C Example 2 A. < B. > C. = Replace with, =, or + to make 0.65 0.650 a true sentence.
10
Example 3 Compare Decimals Replace with, or = to make 0.8 0.87 a true sentence. 0.87 → 0.87 Annex a zero to the right of 0.8 so that it has the same number of decimal places as 0.87. Answer: Since 0 < 7 in the hundredths place, 0.8 < 0.87. 0.8 → 0.80
11
1.A 2.B 3.C Example 3 A. < B. > C. = Replace with, =, or + to make 5.3 5.32 a true sentence.
