4 Da Cat Born August 11, 1934 Budapest, Hungary to Ramona and Miklos Dora Sr. and moved to California in January 1935 Started surfing first with his step-dad Gardner Chapin in San Onofre Was the King of Malibu and a Rebel Loved to surf, ski, play tennis, travel, art, and stuff Never worked a job a day in his life Had a very unique presence and was a true mystery When the movie Gidget crowded Surfrider beach he traveled the world looking for perfect waves all for himself Snuck into many parties He broke the law often and once led the FBI on a seven year chase around the world Was on probation in the USA and left for New Zealand for a while and was wanted by the FBI when in New Zealand secret service was trying to get him he left for Europe Girlfriend through his years of travel was Linda Cuy Second most wanted criminal in the world for credit card violations was wanted by FBI for credit card fraud, airline tickets, bounced checks, and more

5 Da Cat Decided to return to America and face the charges, his whole outlook on life was to be free and he ended up in jail for over six months than came out and had to pay fines and do probation As soon as he could he moved back to France he did He got a dog named Scooter Boy, he became a big part in his life He moved to J-Bay in South Africa he brang Scooter Boy and even though he was in fifties he still surfed the fast big perfect waves of J-Bay where he got the best ride of his life He would always wait for big days and then take of on the biggest sets He was in a two surf movies Left J-Bay when his beloved dog Scooter Boy died Moved to France Found out he was going to die and had only a limited time to live Died on January 3, 2002, at age 67 at his father’s home in Montecito, California after a six month battle with pancreatic cancer

6 GIDGET Kathy Kohner lived in Brentwood and went to Malibu by herself for the first time in 1956 Gidget was walking down the path with a surfboard, Dora and Munoz yelled at her She got such a shock she stumbled and the board tumbled to the rocks They went over and one of them said, “It’s a midget, a girl midget a gidget!” She yelled, “ I’m not a gidget, my name is Kathryn and you can keep your filthy hands off of me, you creep.” Dora and Kathy became great friends, they played tennis, surfed, and traveled the coast together She would tell her father about all her adventures at Malibu and he wrote a book about it It became a movie that lead to more movies, books, and TV shows http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gidget

7 In 1959 the movie version of Gidget opened and the Surf Craze was on. Popular beach movies and surfing music hits rolled out one after another, featuring Malibu, it was appointed as the pop culture "Surf City USA". BEFORE AFTER Gidget caused thousands to take an interest in surfing and the sport was forever changed

8 DUKE KAHANAMOKU INVITATIONAL SURFING CHAMPIONSHIP 1 st Duke Contest was in 1964 Held at Sunset Beach, North Shore Oahu 1 st surfing event to be broadcast on a regular basis Consisted of 2 dozen of best surfers in the world Winner receives a golden Duke statue Ended in 1984 Only contest Miki Dora cared about it DUKE K. August 24, 1890 – January 22, 1968 Father of Modern Surfing, The Pioneer of Surfing In Olympics received 3 gold's and 2 silvers for swimming 1 st person inducted into Surfing Hall of fame, 1 st person inducted into Swimming Hall of Fame
