CULTURE Music. Art. Literature Degenerate art

Aims Art, music and literature was aimed to portray an Aryan society. Hitler did not want to promote free thought threw art, therefore abstract styles were banned.

Actions Any Jewish literature, art or music was destroyed. Visual art was strictly moderated and traditional. The themes were mainly heroism, racial purity, power strength, obedience and militarism No abstract art was allowed and was labeled as Degenerate art and put into special exhibitions where they would be mocked not admired There were also book burnings, the most famous was by students in 1933

FILM AND MUSIC The majority of the German films and music all had to be supportive of Hitler. All music that was foreign was banned e.g. Jazz.

Results How successful was Nazi Germany in controlling the area? Nazi Germany was not very successful during the late 1930s and this was shown by several actions held mostly by teenagers. One example would be the ‘Swing Movement’. This was a group of teenagers who listened to banned music from the US and England which was against the Nazi Regime. What triggered the anger of the Nazis even further, was the fact that this group of teenagers allowed Jewish people in their club. Another example would be the Edelweiss Pirates. They sang songs which criticized the Nazi Regime and mocked the ideologies of Hitler and his party.

Key people Important Figures Albert Speer was known as Hitler’s Architect. He was in charge of designing many monuments and decorations for Nazi events. Arno Breker was a sculptor and he met Joseph Goebbels in Rome. He was then nominated as state sculptor on Hitler’s Birthday; 1937. Hitler considered his art sculpture the most beautiful sculpture seen in Germany. Richard Wagner was a composer; Hitler’s favourite too. Not only did Hitler like his music but he also liked Wagner’s ideas. Wagner wrote a book about how the Jews were ‘poisoning’ the fine art of Germany. Goebbels used this book as a form of propaganda to promote the hatred that the Nazi Party had towards Jewish people.
