King Ludwig II built this castle in order to withdraw from public life. It was opened to the public in 1886, seven weeks after the kings death

The castle was built in a gothic style. Had luxuries such as forced-air heating and indoor plumbing. Contained architecture that reflected German mythology.

King Ludwig II first commissioned in 1869 to mimic the medieval architecture and to honor the composer Richard Wagner. The castle was intended as a solitary retreat. It became a tourist attraction shortly after the death of king Ludwig.

Neuschwanstein is still entirely intact. It is a popular focal point for tourists in Germany.

King Ludwig II was the only person to truly live in this castle, however it has up to 1.3 million tourists a year.
