2  King Ludwig II built this castle in order to withdraw from public life.  It was opened to the public in 1886, seven weeks after the kings death

3  The castle was built in a gothic style.  Had luxuries such as forced-air heating and indoor plumbing.  Contained architecture that reflected German mythology.

4  King Ludwig II first commissioned in 1869 to mimic the medieval architecture and to honor the composer Richard Wagner.  The castle was intended as a solitary retreat.  It became a tourist attraction shortly after the death of king Ludwig.

5  Neuschwanstein is still entirely intact.  It is a popular focal point for tourists in Germany.

6  King Ludwig II was the only person to truly live in this castle, however it has up to 1.3 million tourists a year.
