Section 1-5: Postulates and Theorems Relating Points, Lines, and Planes.

2 POSTULATES Postulate 5: A line contains at least two points; a plane contains at least three points not all in one line; space contains at least four points not all in one plane. Postulate 6: Through any two points there is exactly one line.

3 POSTULATES Postulate 7: Through any three points there is at least one plane, and through any three non-collinear points there is exactly one plane. Postulate 8: If two points are in a plane, then the line that contains the points is in that plane. Postulate 9: If two planes intersect, then their intersection is a line.

4 THEOREMS Theorem 1-1: If two lines intersect, then they intersect in exactly one point. Theorem 1-2: Through a line and a point not in the line, there is exactly one plane. Theorem 1-3: If two lines intersect, then exactly one plane contains the lines.

5 EXAMPLES Classify each statement as true or false and give the definition, postulate or theorem that supports your conclusion. A given triangle can lie in more than one plane. Any two points are collinear. Two planes can intersect in only one point. Two lines can intersect in two points.

6 PRACTICE Classify each statement as true or false.
A postulate is a statement assumed to be true without proof. The phrase “exactly one” has the same meaning as the phrase “ one and only one”. Three points determine a plane. Through any two points there is exactly one plane. Through a line and a point not on the line, there is one and only one plane.
