Hummm…  How do I create an engaging online course that facilitates learning?

From the Classroom to the Computer How to Apply Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction to eLearning Presented by Maléka Ingram September 10, 2008 for Laureate Education, Inc.

Classroom to Computer | Maléka Ingram | 09.10.08 3 Agenda  Learning Objectives  Gagne’s Events of Instruction  Summary  Questions and Answers

Classroom to Computer | Maléka Ingram | 09.10.08 4 Learning Objectives  By the end of this lesson, you will be able to – Identify Gagne’s nine events of instruction – Implement each event for online courses

Classroom to Computer | Maléka Ingram | 09.10.08 5 Scenario  Sales and Marketing personnel are required to use a new Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software  In theory…we are creating an online course to teach them about the new CRM

Classroom to Computer | Maléka Ingram | 09.10.08 6 Gagne’s Events of Instruction 1.Gain Attention 2.Inform Learners of Objectives 3.Stimulate Recall of Prior Learning 4.Present the Content 5.Provide Learning Guidance 6.Provide Practice Exercises 7.Provide Feedback 8.Assess Performance 9.Enhance Retention and Transfer to the Job

Classroom to Computer | Maléka Ingram | 09.10.08 7 Gain Attention  Internal mental process : – Use stimuli to activate receptors – Ensure students are ready to learn  Methods: – Present a real life problem – Pose question to learner  Example: – Present a scenario in which a sales/marketing rep is discussing their frustration with the current tools and processes. Conclude with a lead in to “there’s a better solution out there.” 1

Classroom to Computer | Maléka Ingram | 09.10.08 8 Inform Learners of Objectives  Internal mental process : – Creates level of expectation for learning  Methods for relating instructional goals to the learner include: – Explain purpose of content – Present goals for learning  Example: – The purpose of this course is to teach you how to use the new CRM tool. 2

Classroom to Computer | Maléka Ingram | 09.10.08 9 Stimulate Recall of Prior Learning  Internal mental process – Retrieval and activation of short-term memory  Methods – Pose questions about previous experiences – Present information from previous concepts or a body of content  Example – List scenarios related to how sales/ marketing reps currently do business. 3

Classroom to Computer | Maléka Ingram | 09.10.08 10 Present the Content  Internal mental process – Selective perception of content  Methods – Provide context/ background/ overview – Explain details – Actual footage of demonstration – Audio narration  Example – Provide overview of new CRM tool, detailed descriptions of major tasks and provide simulations of critical tasks. 4

Classroom to Computer | Maléka Ingram | 09.10.08 11 Provide Learning Guidance  Internal mental process – Semantic encoding for storage in long-term memory  Methods – Use of examples, non-examples, case studies, graphical representations, mnemonics, and analogies  Example – When teaching about project management capabilities, give students real life usage examples of when and how they would utilize this functions. 5

Classroom to Computer | Maléka Ingram | 09.10.08 12 Provide Practice Exercises  Internal mental process – Respond to questions to enhance encoding and verification  Methods – Simulations – Games – Quizzes  Example – Have student walk through a guided simulation of inputting data into the new system. 6

Classroom to Computer | Maléka Ingram | 09.10.08 13 Provide Feedback  Internal mental process – Reinforcement and assessment of correct performance  Methods – Pop up windows with explanations, guidance – Virtual coach  Example – During multiple choice exercises, if student answers incorrectly, give an explanation, provide hints, tips, or links to content to reiterate concept. 7

Classroom to Computer | Maléka Ingram | 09.10.08 14 Assess Performance  Internal mental process – Retrieval and reinforcement of content as final evaluation  Methods – Knowledge check/Quiz  Example – Have students complete a simulation without guidance. 8

Classroom to Computer | Maléka Ingram | 09.10.08 15 Enhance retention and transfer to the job  Internal mental process – Retrieval and generalization of learned skill to new situation  Methods – Online help systems – Job aids – References  Example – Include mini-movies (tutorials) in the new system to help guide user if they forget a particular task. 9

Classroom to Computer | Maléka Ingram | 09.10.08 16 Summary Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction: 1.Gain Attention 2.Inform Learners of Objectives 3.Stimulate Recall of Prior Learning 4.Present the Content 5.Provide Learning Guidance 6.Provide Practice Exercises 7.Provide Feedback 8.Assess Performance 9.Enhance retention and transfer to the job

Classroom to Computer | Maléka Ingram | 09.10.08 17 Questions and Answers
