Definition Wood is an organic material. It is produced as secondary xylem in the stems of woody plants, notably trees but also shrubs.xylemwoody plantstrees The wood acts as a protective layer and gives hardness to stems
3
Types. * Softwood: wood from conifers trees. (e.g. pine) * Hardwood: wood from dicotyledons (usually broad-leaved trees, e.g. oak These names are a bit misleading, as hardwoods are not necessarily hard, and softwoods are not necessarily soft
4
There exist another kind clasification for wood types: Bitter: Its “taste” is less enjoyable to termites. Sweet: Wood wich is more sensitive to termite attack.
5
Properties Physical Properties of wood: -Wood is a bad conductor of heat and electricity. -Good Dimensional stability -Low Density -Resistance to weathering -Durability -Wood contains a small percentage of moisture. Mechanical properties: - Wood has good elasticitty - Big Strength
6
Advantages *The wood is an excellent acoustic, thermal and electrical insulator. 15 times more insulating than concrete 400 times more than iron and almost 2000 more than aluminium!! *Is a tough material and has certain flexibility. It flexibility allows land movements or earthquake without cracking the structure. *Wood is more resistant than steel or concrete because in a fire keeps it structure and load capacity. *Low cost
7
Disadvantages *Moisture sensibility *Wood is liable to fungus and bugs attack. *Is requiered destroying a lot of forest worldwide to obtain low quantities of wood
8
Uses -Fuel. -Construction: Houses and boats. Roof construction, in interior doors and their frames, and as exterior cladding. Shuttering material. Raw material. -Arts: Sculptures and carvings. Woodcut for engraves. Musical instruments manufacture.
9
People have used wood for millennia for many purposes, primarily as a fuel or as a construction material for houses, tools, furniture, artworks and paper. Wood continues to be used in a growing number of techniques and products but we must pay attention to the world enviroment balance. To think about
