Romans Part 2 Lesson 7

Romans 7 The righteous, or believers, are dead to the Law Freed from the Law and serve God in newness of the Spirit Theme: The Law and a believer’s relationship to it The Law cannot sanctify

Romans 8 Theme: Alive in the Spirit Context within Romans 6 & 7: No condemnation Law’s requirements fulfilled No wrath of God Question of Rom. 7:24 answered Sons of God are those led by the Spirit

Romans 8:1-17 Why no condemnation? It is linked with sin, death and wrath Believers have the Spirit of life in Christ Different “law” – it is a principle; rule Believers are NOT slaves to sin and death Believers are enslaved to God

God helped man’s situation Condemned sin in the flesh Sent His Son, an offering for sin Jesus paid the price of God’s own requirement for sin!!! Now man can fulfill the Law’s requirements Man can now live by the Spirit Man doesn’t have to walk by the flesh

Contrast Those in the flesh Mind set on flesh Mind set on death Hostile toward God Not able to set mind on God’s law Can’t please God Those in the Spirit Set their mind on things of the Spirit God’s Spirit indwells Righteous Not under obligation to the flesh Led by the Spirit Children of God Heirs with Christ

Application Spirit enables me to deny fleshly desires Spirit leads me to live a righteous life I am identified as God’s child People who do not have God’s Spirit dwelling within are not saved.

Contrast Spirit of slavery Not for the sons of God Slaves to sin Slaves to the Law Spirit of Christ Sons of God Have a spirit of adoption Call God “Abba Father” Have a relationship with Almighty God Spirit dwells within

Romans 8:18-25 Main point of these verses is a contrast between the present and the future Present: suffering and corruption Future: glory and redemption Believers are the “first fruits” We still have to wait for our new bodies

Creation Waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God Subjected to futility Creation’s hope is that it will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of God’s children It groans and suffers pain of childbirth even until now

The Spirit Intercedes for believers in prayer Helps the weakness of believers not knowing HOW to pray Intercedes according to God’s will

The Believer’s Position God justifies God’s elect NO one can charge His elect No condemnation Set free from the law of sin and death

Verses 35-39 Even though the things listed here can lead to physical death, they don’t lead to condemnation and separation from Christ for the believer Only slavery to sin leads to that kind of death Nothing shall separate me from the love of Christ.
