1 Middle East—True or False? By Ms. A’s 4 th grade reading class with LOTS of help from Mrs. Caverly

2 How many countries in the Middle East? A: Probably the best way to explain the location of the Middle East is to say that it lies at the junction of Asia, Africa, and Europe. It is important to note that there is no official definition of “the Middle East,” no universally agreed-upon set of countries that make up the region. Different people have different areas in mind when they use the term. The size and shape of the region changes based on how it is defined: by geography, by ethnic identities, by religions, by shared history, or by some combination of these characteristics. AsiaAfricaEurope Of the 28 countries that fall within this broader area, 22 lie completely in Asia and 2 lie completely in Africa. (See “Middle East Countries by Continent” list below.) The remaining 4 countries are split between two continents: Rand McNally

3 How many continents are in the middle east? Middle East Countries by Continent Asia: Afghanistan, Armenia, Bahrain, Cyprus, Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Yemen (Note: The Gaza Strip and the West Bank are also part of Asia.) Africa: Libya, Sudan Africa-Asia: Egypt Asia-Europe: Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan Because the Middle East lies at the junction of Asia, Europe, and Africa, and because several of its countries straddle two of the continents, it's not surprising that the region's geography causes confusion. Rand McNally
