The Flag’s Design The flag was designed by Zeng Liansong a citizen of Rui’an, Zhenjiang The golden stars represent the unity of the Chinese people under the communist party and the red represents revolution

The Flag Contest The Republic of China had a contest to see what design they should use for the flag in July of 1949 There was a total of 2,992 flags sent into the flag committee by the end of August 1949 The Chinese flag committee narrowed the design down to the 38 best designs

The Design Winner The flag was designed by Zeng Liansong a citizen of Ruian, Zhenjiang Province of China who was born in 1917 He worked in the Economics Department of Nanjing University He designed the flag and was rewarded with 5 million Yuan (approx $100)

Zeng’s Original Design The hammer and sickle were removed because it was too similar to the Soviet Union’s flag

What the Flag Design Represents The little stars represent the four social classes and the big star represents the Chinese people His inspiration came from the stars and moon in the sky The contest stated that you had to use bright red in the design

Current Interpretation Today the red represents the revolution and the gold is to shine on the red background The stars represent the unity of the Chinese people under the communist party

Important dates July 1949 the contest started October 1949 the flag was hoisted by Mao Zedong (The Leader of the People’s Republic of China) in front of Beijing's Tiananmen Square
