2 Population Patterns The British Isles have welcomed a large number of immigrants and many refugees have fled to Great Britain. How is the US experience similar to what is described in the British Isles? How would a wave of immigrants reshape the culture in these areas? What is Northern Europe’s largest and oldest urban area? Why do the British Isles have a greater population than the Scandinavian Peninsula?

3 The Rise of Northern Europe Middle Ages - 500 A.D.– 1500 A.D. Feudalism - a system in which monarchs or lords gave land to nobles in return for pledges of loyalty Reformation - a religious movement of the 1500s that lessened the power of the Roman Catholic Church and introduced Protestantism to Europe Enlightenment - a movement to value reason and question tradition What group brought Scandinavian influence to the British Isles?

4 Winds of Change Industrial Revolution - transformed manufacturing in Europe by replacing human labor with machines Industrial Capitalism - an economic system in which owners used profits to expand their companies Communism - a philosophy that called for economic equality and ownership of resources by workers Cold War - a power struggle between the Soviet-controlled Communist world and the non-Communist world

5 Culture European Union - it’s goal is to unite Europe so that goods, services and workers can move freely among member countries Welfare State - countries that offer complete social welfare programs to their citizens Romanticism - focused on emotions, stirring historical events, and struggles of individuals How are welfare states able to provide social services to all their citizens?
