What Comes Next Here is a sequence of letters:
O T T F F S ____, _____, _____ What 4 letters come next in this sequence? What does the sequence represent?
2
Solution The next four letters are S, E, N, and T.
Each letter is the first letter of a number written in word form, the numbers being the sequence of natural numbers: One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten.

3-3 The Coordinate Plane
4
Coordinate Planes Quadrant Two Quadrant One Quadrant Three Quadrant
Y-axis 4 3 2 1 -1 -2 -3 -4 Quadrant Two Quadrant One X-axis Quadrant Three Quadrant Four origin
5
Quadrant Two (-, +) Quadrant One ( +, +) Quadrant Three (-, -)
An ordered pair is a pair of numbers used to locate a point on the coordinate plane. The ordered pair is always listed with the x-coordinate then the y-coordinate. ( x, y) Ex. (5, -3) Quadrant Two (-, +) Quadrant One ( +, +) 4 3 2 1 -1 -2 -3 -4 Quadrant Three (-, -) Quadrant Four (+, -)
6
To read or write an ordered pair always locate the x coordinate first.
X -Axis ( 1, )
7
Then locate the y coordinate.
4 3 2 1 -1 -2 -3 -4 ( 1, 3 ) Y axis
8
The ordered pair at the origin is (0, 0)
What are the ordered pairs for these points? (3,4) (-3, 3) 4 3 2 1 -1 -2 -3 -4 (1,1) (2, -2) (-4, 0) (0, -3)
9
Plot the following points on the coordinate plane.
(2, -4) (-1, -1) (3, 2) (-4, 3) 4 3 2 1 -1 -2 -3 -4
10
When will we use this? The coordinate plane is used to locate places on a map. Lines of latitude and longitude are used. Hurricane tracking uses the coordinate plane.
11
Summary The coordinate plane is used to plot points on a graph.
There are 4 Quadrants in the coordinate plane. The x-axis is the horizontal axis, the y-axis is the vertical axis. Points are written as ordered pairs: (x, y). To locate a point on a graph locate the x-coordinate first and then the y-coordinate.
