Do Now: Read the samples and follow the directions. These samples come from a DBQ that asked: What caused the fall of the Roman Empire?

How do we organize writing a DBQ ESSAY? 1. READ THE QUESTIONS/DOCS (YOU ALREADY DID THAT) 2. FILL OUT THE BRAINSTORMING CHART (THIS IS TO JUST GET YOUR IDEAS OUT) 3. CREATE AN OUTLINE 4. WRITE THE ESSAY!

How do we work evidence into our DBQ essays? You need BOTH documents and outside info cited THROUGHOUT the paper You need BOTH documents and outside info cited THROUGHOUT the paper You need at least ONE piece of outside info PER paragraph The amount of docs needed depends on the DBQ In general the rule is ½ + 1. So in this case you need to cite 6 documents throughout the essay That means you need to have at least ONE doc cited PER paragraph So for this essay, that would leave you with 3 more docs that you would need to cite How you distribute the rest of the evidence cited from docs is up to you

How do we work evidence into our DBQ essays? * When you put evidence into your paper, it’s best to try to EXPLAIN THE CONNECTIONS between the evidence. That will make you a stronger writer and lead to a better grade * When you put evidence into your paper, it’s best to try to EXPLAIN THE CONNECTIONS between the evidence. That will make you a stronger writer and lead to a better grade * Look at the sample to help you get an idea of what I’m looking for (This sample comes from a DBQ that asked: What caused the fall of Rome?)

How do we cite the evidence? You MUST cite evidence in order to get credit for it You MUST cite evidence in order to get credit for it When citing outside info, label it as (OI) at the end of the sentence When citing docs, you can either: -Have the doc in parenthesis at the end (doc 4). -Or start with the SOURCES NAME: -According to Tacitus,…… (doc 4). -You CAN NOT start like this: -According to doc 4… -Doc 4 says…

A few notes about Analysis A lot of you are over stressing about analysis A lot of you are over stressing about analysis Analysis= asking yourself why x, y, z was important to people back then. Did it positively/negatively impact society? If so, how. We discuss analysis all the time in class Analysis can differ in between papers! Student A can look at a piece of evidence and come to one conclusion, while student B can come to another Connecting it back to your evidence is what makes for a stronger paper (and it will help you to assess if what you are saying makes sense). Start analysis by saying “As a result,…” “Consequently…”

How to write a thesis for this DBQ Do not repeat the prompt! The Middle Ages deserves titles of Age of faith, dark ages, and Golden age. I’m left asking “why…” “so what…” Make sure you take a stand! The stand you take is effectively the three titles you are choosing but there should be a reason If you want to start with some basic, see Ms. Goldsmith’s example for the layout/structure
