1. Overview of ASEAN-ROK relations □ mutually beneficial partnership - complementarities of both economies - vigorous entrepreneurship ☐ ASEAN emerged as Korea's 3rd largest trading partner, 2nd largest investment destination - since the establishment of dialogue partnership in 1989, trade volume increases 11 times, investment 34 times - trade: 90.2 billion USD, investment : 6.8 billion USD (2008)

☐ ASEAN is No. 1 travel destination - 3.5 million Koreans visit ASEAN countries every year ☐ Development Cooperation - Korea' development supports for ASEAN amount to USD 283 million in grant, USD 1.57 billion in credit assistance in 2007 - Korea contributed 5 million USD to Initiatives for ASEAN Integration (IAI)

2. ASEAN-ROK Dialogue Partnership ☐ 'Sectoral Dialogue Partnership' in 1989 - 3 initial cooperation areas: trade, investment, tourism ☐ Full Dialogue Partnership established in 1991 - currently cooperate in ASEAN+3, ASEAN+1, EAS framework covering comprehensive areas - holds ASEAN-ROK Summit annually since 1997 - ROK-ASEAN Dialogue, Joint Planning and Review Committee (JPRC)

☐ 2004 Joint Declaration on Comprehensive Cooperation Partnership - blueprint for future cooperation - 'Plan of Action' adopted in 2005 to suggest concrete cooperative projects - Annual Progress Report to ROK-ASEAN Summit ☐ ROK-ASEAN FTA; a Springboard for stronger economic cooperation - 'The ASEAN-ROK Agreement on Trade in Goods' in August 2006 - 'The ASEAN-ROK Agreement on Trade in Services' in November 2007 - 'The ASEAN-ROK Investment Agreement' in June, 2009

☐ Korea-ASEAN Center - launched in 13 March, 2009 - will serve as an effective channel to promote trade, investment, cultural and tourism exchanges

□ ASEAN-Korea Traditional Music Orchestra - World's first Orchestra consisting of 80 traditional musicians from Korea and ASEAN countries - harmonization of 52 traditional musical instruments

□ Green Asia, Green growth exhibition - to share Korea's vision of 'Low Carbon, Green Growth' by presenting Korea's green technology and related products

5. Prominent Role of Thailand in the Summit □ PM Abhisit's leading role as ASEAN chair - co-chaired the commemorative summit - co-host of the press conference □ Keynote speaker of the CEO Summit

6. General Assessment of the Summit □ expansion of cooperative areas - while reinforcing bilateral cooperation, Korea and ASEAN are committed to collaborate in addressing regional and global issues

□ exploration of future areas for cooperation - green growth cooperation as a new growth engine - strengthen development cooperation; increasing ROK‘s contribution to IAI, more engaging in activities to narrow the development gap among ASEAN members □ A variety of sideline events led to wider business & public networks

7. Future Directions for ROK-ASEAN cooperation ☐ President Lee's New Asia Initiative - announced in March 2009, aims to enhance the level of overall substantial cooperative relations with ASEAN and other Asian countries in various fields ☐ 3 target areas for future cooperation with ASEAN ➭ development cooperation ➭ cultural and people-to-people exchanges ➭ low carbon green growth

□ Concrete Goals as proposed by President at Commemorative Summit ➭ increase trade volume to 150 billion dollars by 2015 ➭ tailored development cooperation that fits each receiving countries‘ needs - double ROK’s ODA to ASEAN by 2015 ; increase grant aid by three times, approve soft loans of 2.4 billion - visiting program to invite 7,000 ASEAN trainees to Korea by 2015 - 'World Friends Korea' to dispatch 10,000 Korean volunteer workers by 2015
