13. Berlin Wall Crisis  Berlin Wall- concrete wall topped with barbed wire that split Berlin in half  East German’s fled into West Germany b/c it was free from communist rule (led to construction)  Built by USSR  Symbol of communist oppression

Race to the Moon  April 12, 1961, Soviets put first man in space  JFK sees this as a challenge and decided to America would surpass Soviets by sending a man to the moon  “But why, some say, the moon?... And they may well ask, why climb the highest mountain? Why, thirty-five years ago, fly the Atlantic? Why does Rice play Texas?”- John F. Kennedy
