1
Photosynthesis How the process of getting energy from the sun is organized and WHY it is essential!
2
Where are we? Functional of the plant: Of the leaf: Of the mesophyll cell: Of the chloroplast:
3
Overview
4
Energy from light Wavelength Absorption Reflection
5
Light Dependent Reactions What is happening here? What part of the chloroplast are we in?
6
Electron Transport Chain Photosystem II: –Split water –Give off O2 gas –Chlorophyll ’ s Electrons released to the ETC to make ATP –Water replenishes electrons Photosystem I: –Form NADPH –Electrons from P II replace chlorophyll ’ s electrons
7
Why does an electron transport chain produce ATP?
8
So where are we?
9
Light Independent Reactions (Calvin Cycle) Where does this happen? What is happening here?
10
Calvin Cycle CO 2 is reduced by the H ’ s from NADPH ATP from light reactions is necessary for this to work. Enzyme “ rubisco ” helps add H ’ s Forms a 3 carbon sugar “ G3P ” Calvin cycle must happen 2X to make a glucose
11
Why these two parts are dependent upon eachother
12
Photosynthesis and Respiration Make a Venn Diagram comparing photosynthesis and aerobic cellular respiration. Remember to include similarities and not just differences!
13
Adaptations! Photorespiration: when it is really hot and dry and plants close their stomata to keep in water, they accidentially use O 2 instead of CO 2 in the calvin cycle. Why is this bad?
14
Who lives in hot, dry areas? Pineapples – C4 plants Cactus –CAM plants
15
Adaptations Temporal Structural Why are organic acids necessary?
