4. Maternity Services The NNUH is a centre of excellence providing a modern maternity service to both high and low risk mothers and their babies. The maternity service is provided collaboratively by midwives, obstetricians & general practitioners.

5. Some Facts & Figures 5120 births in 2004. 150 home births 1196 caesarean sections 2 sets of triplets 83 sets of twins 68 water births Patch covered by the NNUH service =1200 square miles. Average mileage of a community midwife = 7000 miles per year.

6. The Women’s Journey ANTENATAL – LEADING UP TO THE BIRTH INTRAPARTUM – AROUND THE BIRTH POST NATAL – FOLLOWING THE BIRTH

7. Recruitment & Retention of Midwives We have 134 whole time equivalent (WTE) midwives in post, supported by 35(WTE) nursing assistants. The national shortage of midwives is being felt locally and regionally.
