2 The Prologue Turn to the prologue on page 722.
What do we learn from the prologue? What questions come to mind after reading the prologue? Predict what you think will be key issues in the play.

3 What is a FEUD? Think of examples of feuds. Perhaps think of wars that started because of long-term conflicts between two sides, populations that have clashed in the past or currently, gang rivalries, etc. Write down a reason why you think feuds often drag on and result in violence or other serious consequences.

4 Who’s involved in the feud?
Capulets (including Juliet) vs. the Montagues (including Romeo)

5 Terms Characterization- process of conveying information about a character through descriptions, actions, speech, and thoughts. Aside- a dramatic device where characters speak to audience and it is unheard by other characters. Conflict- External - Man vs. society; man vs. man; man vs. nature Internal - Man vs. self

6 Terms – cont. Epithet- a characterizing word taking the place of a noun for a person or thing. Pun- play on words based on similarity of sound between two different words with two different meanings. Blank verse- unrhymed verse written in iambic pentameter. Couplet- two lines that rhyme and have the same meter.

7 Terms continued… Iambic meter- 2 (two) syllable foot [daDUM]
Iambic pentameter- (10 lines) or 5 (five) feet of stressed and unstressed syllables [daDUM]x5
