Intergovernmental organization made up of 193 member-states with the main purpose to globally promote and achieve peace and human rights Overview

● Founded in 1945 to replace the collapsed League of Nations ● Began with 51 nations with the Charter of the United Nations, stating 4 goals: 1.To maintain international peace and security 2.To develop friendly relations based on human rights 3.To achieve international co-operation in solving world problems 4.To be a center for “harmonizing the actions of nations” Background

● main representative body in which all member-states have one vote ● led by a president elected by the GA itself ● meets yearly, but can be called for emergency sessions ● votes on UN resolutions, or courses of action proposed by one of eight subcommittees ● two-thirds majority needed for certain important issues like admittance of new states, peace+security, and budget; other issues require only simple majority 1.General Assembly (GA)

● Made up of 15 member states o 5 are permanent (The U.S., the UK, Russia, the PRC, and France) o other 10 are elected for two-year terms by the GA (Currently Argentina,Australia,Chad, Chile, Jordan, Lithuania Luxembourg, Nigeria, Republic of Korea, and Rwanda) ● Has power to veto GA resolutions ● “takes the lead in determining the existence of a threat to the peace or act of aggression”--UN website 2.Security Council

● 54-member council elected by GA to discuss and vote on the UN’s economic and social policies and actions 3.Economic and Social Council

● Responsible for carrying out the operations of the UN ● 43,000 staff members worldwide ● oath required not to answer to the authority of any one government ● Headed by Secretary-General (Ban Ki- moon) 4.Secretariat

● Judicial arm ● settles international law cases ● Composed of 15 judges elected by the GA and Security council ● headed by an administrative body known as the Registry 5.International Court of Justice (ICJ)
