1
Today’s Objectives TSW distinguish between plant and animal cells and diagram them. TSW distinguish between prokaryotes and eukaryotes.
2
Plants, Fungi & Animal Cells
Plants Only Cell wall of cellulose Central vacuole Chloroplasts Animals Only Lysosomes Centrioles Fungi Only Cell wall of chitin Central vacuole No chloroplasts
3
Prokaryotes – “Bacteria”
Simplest and oldest form of life Usually single celled
4
Prokaryotes are ABUNDANT
They can live in any environment on Earth Eubacteria – common bacteria Archaebacteria – ancient bacteria; live in harsh environments
5
Eukaryotes vs. Prokaryotes
Nucleus & Organelles Linear chromosomes Unicellular or multicellular Cell wall (plants & fungus) Cell membrane (all) Prokaryotes No organelles Circular chromosomes Unicellular or colonial Cell wall Cell membrane
