WASTE MANAGEMENT Hazardous waste What is hazardous waste? Legislation How to identify? Methods of disposal Responsibilities

WASTE MANAGEMENT What is hazardous waste? The definition of hazardous waste is wide ranging, generally classed as hazardous if it contains or has properties that might make it harmful to health or the environment.

WASTE MANAGEMENT Legislation – Hazardous waste regulations 2005 Laminar Medica has a legal obligation as a producer of hazardous waste to ensure that it handles, stores and disposes of this in a safe manner. It is a prosecutable offence to fail to comply with these regulations.

WASTE MANAGEMENT DANGEROUS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT IRRITANT / HARMFUL CORROSIVE TOXIC EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE How to identify hazardous waste? Check packaging for these symbols:

WASTE MANAGEMENT How to identify hazardous waste? Common examples include: Containers regardless of whether they are empty or not Paints and varnishes Adhesives Oily rags and towels. Materials used to clear up spills Used oils, including hydraulic oils Fluorescent tubes, including low energy bulbs, batteries, WEEE 1 Miscellaneous e.g. Plaster board See A-Z guidance of waste management for additional information on methods of disposal.

WASTE MANAGEMENT Methods of disposal Oils and hydraulic fluids Oily rags, towels, including filters (oil) Used containers, including paints, solvents and adhesives Materials used to clear up spills Batteries, fluorescent tubes, electrical equipment

WASTE MANAGEMENT Oils and hydraulic fluids All oils and hydraulic fluids must be transferred into suitable containers*, preferably the same as they were supplied in. Ensure that the containers are placed in a bunded tray. *Ensure that the container is clearly labelled to show description of waste and volume.

Oily rags, towels, including filters (oil) These items must be placed into the “yellow” hazardous rag containers* located in the engineering department unit 4 and facilities engineering department unit 14. *Use portable waste rag bucket for transferring material from place of work e.g. maintaining machinery WASTE MANAGEMENT

Used containers, including paints, solvents and adhesives These items must be placed into the “white” hazardous buckets located at various points. If there is a risk that the containers may leak, they must be placed in clear plastic bags and sealed before depositing in the buckets. This is essential to prevent cross contamination.

WASTE MANAGEMENT Materials used to clear up spills All materials that have been used for clearing up spills must be disposed in a separate labelled white spill material waste bucket.

WASTE MANAGEMENT Batteries, fluorescent tubes, electrical equipment If size permits these items must be placed into the “white” hazardous buckets located at various points. Otherwise contact Facilities department for help and advice.

WASTE MANAGEMENT Responsibilities Never place hazardous waste with general waste! Everybody! - must comply with the methods of disposal as outlined. Never store oxidizing & acid substances together! 1 Contractors - they should already be aware of Laminar Medica’s requirements before they start work through the permit to work policy.
