1 + The Life of Andrew Jackson By: Lily Krasowski

2 + Date of birth Andrew Jackson was born on March 15 th, 1767.

3 + Place of birth Andrew Jackson was born in Waxhaws, South Carolina.

4 + Childhood Andrew, his 2 brothers, and his mom lived in South Carolina. His father died a few days before he was born. After his father died, Andrew’s mother and her three children moved in with their relatives. He went to public schools and learned higher material. Andrew became an orphan at the age of 14 after everyone in his immediate family had died.

5 + Personal facts Andrew’s nickname was “ Old Hickory”. Andrew killed a man for insulting his wife. Andrew won the popular vote for president 3 times. He was the only president who was a prisoner in a war. Andrew and his wife, Rachel, adopted 2 native American boys. He was a democrat. Lots of people supported his ideas and decisions.

6 + Election of 1824 In the Election of 1824, it was a close vote but John Quincy Adams had won and he was claimed president. John Adams had 84 electoral votes and Andrew Jackson had 99 electoral votes. Andrew got votes from the whole nation.

7 + Election of 1828 The South, the West, and the states of Pennsylvania and New York voted for Jackson in the election. Andrew had 178 electoral votes. Andrew Jackson was claimed president. He won against John Adams.

8 + Jackson and a Political Convention The first Democratic National Convention was held in May of 1832. A total of 334 delegates came from every state but Missouri. The convention was lead by Andrew Jackson. The purpose of the convention was to elect a vice president. The Democrats would meet every 4 years and that made a tradition that still happens today.

9 + Jackson Actively Campaigning Jackson immediately started campaigning for the elecetion of 1828. He would continuously give speeches and rallies. Jackson would also talk to the people. That won him the spot as president in 1828. Andrew was the first president elected from the West.

10 + Spoils System The Spoils System was used to hire and fire people in the 19 th century. Andrew wanted to change the way that the federal government operated. The Spoils System was judged for decades by lots of people.

11 + Kitchen Cabinet Jackson stopped having Cabinet Meetings because of fighting with Vice President John C. When he stopped with the meetings, he went to his friends and advisors to help him mock the Cabinet by calling it the “ Kitchen Cabinet”. This played in a very important place for Jackson and his administration during 1831.

12 + Veto Power used by Jackson Andrew made it clear to everyone that he was the ruler of his administration and could use his presidential veto power whenever he wanted. Andrew vetoed more bills then any other president before him. Jackson was the first president to ever pocket veto, which means he never signed the bill in 10 days preventing it from becoming a law.

13 + Nullification Crisis The Nullification Crisis started in the 1830’s when leaders of South Carolina proposed an idea that a state didn’t have to follow a law. Andrew and his followers strategized a plan to sabatoge John Adams’ presidency. They pushed a proposal through to Congress that would raise tariffs significantly. Supporters of the Nullification were called the “Nullies”.

14 + Trail of Tears In 1838 and 1839, the Cherokee Indians were forced to move out of their territory and into the East by the Mississippi River and what is now Oklahoma. This was called the “ Trail of Tears” because it was a sad and devastating time for the Indians. The Indians had diseases, hunger and exhaustion.
