TIMES 3 Technological Integrations in Mathematical Environments and Studies Jacksonville State University 2010

InspireData e-Survey Software InspireData has the capability to create surveys that can be launched on a single computer in a classroom or on the internet where anyone with web access can submit responses to the questions.

Overview of Steps Create a survey in a table with the questions as the field (column) titles. Launch the survey and complete it on the computer OR Publish eSurvey to place it online Obtain ID values to identify the eSurvey After responses are entered, download them into a new table. End the survey Use the InspireData summary features or export the table to Excel for analysis with a statistical package such as Minitab or SPSS

Getting Started Open the software and Click on New to bring up a blank table.

Entering Questions Click on Field 1and enter the first question. Define the Values. This is usually “number” or “text.” Select the Validation. The table contains standard choices like gender, or choices can be custom selected. Select Single Answer, not List unless you want to allow more than one answer to be given to the question. Repeat for the remaining questions.

Expanding the Table There are icons at the top of the table to “add record to table” or “add field to table.” If you are entering data by hand, adding a record (row) makes a place to enter a person’s response to the survey. If you are creating the survey, adding a field (column) makes a place for a new question.

Final Touches Click on Table Click on Edit Survey This is the place to add a title to the survey and/or an invitation to those who will be answering the questions. Questions can be edited. The choice can be made to omit questions or require them. Any changes must be made here before the survey is made available for responses. Click OK

To Publish an e-Survey If the survey is to be placed online, go to Table and Click on Publish e-Survey A Survey ID and an Owner ID will be given ONCE. Be sure to write them down! Click on Done. (Do not click on End e- Survey. This is used when the choice is made to stop receiving responses.)

Paper Copies of the Survey If some responses are to be completed on paper and then entered into the table by hand, a copy does not have to be retyped. Option 1. Go to the table, click on Table and then click on Print Survey. Option 2. Go to the website, enter the Survey ID, and click on Start. Click on File and then Print.

Taking the survey To take the survey on the computer where it is stored, click on Table and then Launch and enter responses. Click Add Record when finished. To take an eSurvey, go to http://esurvey.inspiredata.com, enter the survey ID, and click start. Enter the responses then click Submit. http://esurvey.inspiredata.com

To obtain the responses In a Launch survey, when the person responding clicks Add Record, the responses are automatically added to the table. For an eSurvey, go to the main page and click eSurvey Download Survey Results. Enter the Survey ID and click Open. All the responses given online will be added to a new table. This can be done more than once with new responses added to the existing database with each download.

To check progress on an eSurvey At any time while the survey is active online, go to the table and click File and then click View eSurvey log to see how many people have responded.

To end an eSurvey From the table click on File and then click on End eSurvey. To end a survey you must have the Owner ID.

To work with the data From the table, click on File then select Open eSurvey Database.

Exporting Data InspireData will calculate basic statistics and provide graphs. For more advanced statistics the table can be exported to Excel and then opened by Minitab or some other statistical package. From the table, click on File and then click on Export Table. Enter a file name and choose the.csv extension as the file type. Open with Excel and proceed with the desired analysis.

Have fun! Conduct experiments and save time by having students enter their results online instead of collecting all the information and creating a spreadsheet. Let students design a survey to collect data to answer questions such as “Which gender sends more text messages?” Design a survey to evaluate your instructional methods. Conduct your own research.

Questions? This is what happens when M.C. Escher rolls dice!
