Acetaminophen “Also Known As Tylenol”
2
What is it? Molecular formula C 8 H 9 NO 2 Described as a “white, crystalline powder”
3
What Does It Do? Analgesia (pain relieving)- Researchers aren’t entirely sure, but they believe that acetaminophen increases the pain threshold---- Therefore it increases your tolerance for pain. Speculation is that a nitric oxide pathway may be inhibited by neurotransmitters resulting from consumption of the drug. Antipyresis (anti + pyr = no fire = no fever!!!)- Acetaminophen works as an antipyresis agent. The drug can be taken to inhibit pyrogens (fever causing agents) near the back of the hypothalamus (heat-controlling centers of the brain). Essentially, its medicinal benefit comes from stopping the agents that cause fever.
