Bobcat searching tips TRANSLITERATION !!!! It involves not only replacement of Arabic or Hebrew script by Roman letters but also filling in the vowels. In Arabic, Persian and Hebrew short vowels are not recorded in the script and they are reconstructed in the Roman script. This is often cause of confusion. محمد Muhammad vs. Mohammad vs. Mohammed Link to LC transliteration tables is on ME subject pageLC transliteration tables Omit the definite article 'al-' at the start of a names and titles. Mutanabbi NOT al-Mutanabbi For modern names type the last name of a person first. Mahfuz, Najib Sadawi, Nawal NOT El Saadawi, Nawal Some older (up to 19 th c.) Arabic names are searched in direct order Abu al-Faraj al-Isbahani
