For those in management or supervisory positions, speaking to groups of people is often part of the job. This brief presentation aims to help prepare you to deliver your speech with confidence.

© STM Quality Limited STM Quality Limited Writing Your Presentation What are the aims of your speech? How long have you got? In a single speech, choose four or five key points you want to convey – a speech is more effective if a listener has to concentrate on a few points.

© STM Quality Limited STM Quality Limited Writing Your Presentation Structure is important – you must have an introduction, middle and an end. It is important to have a good clear beginning to grab the attention of the audience.

© STM Quality Limited STM Quality Limited Writing Your Presentation Don’t be afraid of referring to your audience as ‘you’ – make speech more personal and more real to those who are listening. Avoid using jargon. Long and unusual words could baffle your audience rather than impress them.

© STM Quality Limited STM Quality Limited Writing Your Presentation Use short sentences – long sentences can be difficult for the listener to follow. Humour is a good way to relax you and your audience if done properly – practice before using in speech!

© STM Quality Limited STM Quality Limited Writing Your Presentation Be enthusiastic – think about all the positive things you are saying and why you are saying them – make sure they come through in your speech. Don’t let nerves or stress make your speech too formal – be natural!

If your speech is shorter than the time allowed, don’t ad lib – this could change the structure of your speech.

You may want to thank listeners for listening – this is a definite full stop and make you personable!

© STM Quality Limited STM Quality Limited Remember to… Write out full speech then cut it down until you have key points only on cue cards. Number cue cards in case you drop them. Use A4 paper if sitting down or standing at a lectern. Write your speech as you speak – not as you write!
