Unit Design – What Parents Should Know 1 Unit Per Quarter – Specific Theme Purposefully designed to “start with the end in mind” Standards aligned, including a variety of assessments used to inform instruction and assess mastery Implemented consistently across all 10 teachers at the grade level

Writer’s Workshop All students at Chelsea will participate in Writer’s Workshop this year. This will focus on explicit instruction in writing daily. Our goal is to develop a love of writing in all of our students.

CATCH UP CLUB During students’ lunch/recess If student forgets an assignment or has not completed hw he/she may finish the work during their lunch or recess and it will not be considered late or incomplete If a child chooses not to attend catch up club – the assignment will be LATE and a hw notice will be sent home to inform the parents of the late/missing work

Math Extension Students will take a pretest prior to each unit Those students that meet the criteria will attend math extension 3 days a week from 12:30-1:10 (I, G, E days) Students will participate in project based learning activities (which will be aligned with the common core standards for each unit)

Grading and Retakes Evidence of learning is 80% and above Retakes will be given on “outcome assessments” that fall below 80% The highest score that can be earned is 80% Outcome Assessments will be sent home with the coversheet attached There will no longer be a separate grade on the report card for Language Arts and Reading. The ELA grade will combine the language arts, reading and writing grades
