4. 4 2008 Budget Request for Fixed Capital Outlay As submitted, based on revised CJEC (Oct 2007): FY 08-09:$649 million(10,003 beds) FY 08-09 to FY 12-13:$1.85 billion(25,920 beds) Florida will need to fund the equivalent of 19 new prisons over the next five years. 1,335 inmates per prison $100 million to construct $40 million to operate

5. 5 1)Allow the approximately 3,000 Work Release inmates already working in the community by day to stay in the community at night. 2)The goal would be to approve placement of inmates with family, but approved housing may include appropriate treatment centers and half-way houses. 3)Fill those emptied Work Release beds with eligible inmates from other institutions. 6. 6 1)Delays the need for $301,227,000 in construction. 2)Increase public safety by providing offenders with a supervised and graduated reentry into society. 3)Expands existing Work Release program, taking advantage of a less costly method of incarceration. 4)Consistent with Florida Statutes that direct the Department to seek appropriate alternative placements for inmates to better prepare them for reentry.
