What effect did the Transcontinental Railroad have on the people of the United States?

1. How many states existed in 1860? 2. Was there land owned by the United States government that was not admitted to the Union as a state yet? 3. How does a territory become a state? 4. Why do you think people cross the country to settle in Oregon & California, but not the Great Plains area?

5. Were there good water sources on the plains? 6. If there were few trees, with what would settlers build? What would they use for fuel? 7. What means of transportation existed between the East and West Coast? 8. What means of communication existed?

9. How could the government entice people to live settle in the middle of the country? 10. How could railroad companies be encouraged by the government to build a railroad to service a part of the country where there were not many citizens?

Population of territory must reach 60,000. Create a state constitution. Provided civil liberties and public education.

Transcontinental RR— railroad that spanned from East to West coast. Central Pacific RR employed Chinese Union Pacific hired Irish & Civil War Vets Accidents & disease disabled and killed thousands of men each year. RR time helped set by standardized time zones.
