2 Braking Systems w Must be able to hold the full maximum unbalanced load in suspension in shaft Achieved by placing brakes on the drum or drive system of a Keope w Must be able to stop a maximum unbalanced load at full speed within a design tolerance distance Also achieved by brake on drum Over-wiend Story at Carr Fork

3 More Braking w All braking systems so far clamp down on drum to stop travel - what if rope breaks w Use jaws with teeth that dig into guide rails for skip. Rope tension keeps them open - if lost the close Very destructive braking system - tear up guides Better dropping a skip into bottom of the shaft
