Belvedere Book Club Literacy Project 2010 By Wendy West

Target Audience Introduce different genres to students during media classes Survey students to see what types of books they like to read and what types of books that they might be interested in reading Create book clubs based on genres There will be three 5 th grade book clubs and two 4 th grade book clubs. There should be 10 or less students in each group.

Time Commitment Each group will meet one recess a week for 2 months. The students will be responsible for reading before their meeting. Students will create a presentation to share their books with other students on the morning news.

Focus Students will read for pleasure. The media specialist will facilitate discussions during the book club to make sure students are comprehending and relating the story to their own life. Students will enjoy reading and sharing their thoughts and ideas with their peers.

Resources Multiple copies of titles will be needed. I will gather books from Anne Arundel County Public Libraries and other schools if necessary. Parent volunteers may be used to facilitate the book clubs. The media mini-lab can be used to help create presentations.

Publicity Students will share their presentations on the morning announcements. The bulletin board in media will be decorated with book covers from the books the groups have chosen and work that the students create during the book club.

Outcomes 1.0 Literature Appreciation: Students will demonstrate an appreciation of literature as a reflection of human experience and reading as a pleasurable activity A. Literature Appreciation 1. Identify relationships among literary settings, characters, actions, and events and situations in real life. 2. Use libraries to facilitate development of good reading habits. 3. Experience the pleasure of recreational reading. 4. Recognize the connection between reading and being a lifelong learner. 6.0 Share Findings/Conclusions: Students will be able to communicate findings/conclusions by producing materials in an appropriate format to support written oral and multi-media presentations. A. Share findings/conclusions 1. Make decisions to facilitate effective communication of ideas.
