It maybe how foods are grown (ENVIRONMENT), what we are told is safe for us to eat (GOVERNMENT), supply & demand (ECONOMICS) or new foods being created (TECHNOLOGY). For each factor, you will be asked to link up to a provided site and answer a few questions regarding the page and your personal feelings on that matter. This involves air, water, soil, mineral resources, plants & animals. If there is a problem with any of these, it can greatly affect the cost and supply of food. If there is drought, then the price of vegetables will go up since there aren’t as many being grown. Government policies and agencies like the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) & FDA (Food & Drug Administration) determine what can and cannot be sold to Americans. One way they do this is by setting laws of what packaging can say about a food product. Some foods can be taken off of a shelf because of false information on a label. This means if a person is willing to pay for a product, producers will provide it. Consumer demands for a certain product go way beyond what Wal-Mart stocks their shelves with. Some foods like coffee & sugar come from far-off places. Many countries where this food is grown have large amounts of poor families. So, instead of the land in their country being used to grow plants for them to eat, they are used to grow big exports (like sugar & coffee) that are sent around the world. This means that the rich landowners get richer, and the poor families go hungry. Many agricultural companies are using plants that have been bioengineered to keep them from rotting, grow bigger, or ward off harmful insects. Currently, when a food has undergone bioengineering, the package does not have to be labeled, therefore not letting the consumer know. Read the following section of an article explaining what bioengineering means, and the FDA’s plan to inform the public.
