Metrics for Physical Science The Easy Way: The Easy Way: Learning Learning the Metric System and Conversions the Metric System and Conversions Utilizing the Factor Label Method Created and designed by Arnold Lund Kadoka High School Arnold.Lund@k12.sd.us

Objectives of the Metric Lessons The student will: 1.recognize that working with Metrics (S.I) is mandatory in today's world. 2.know the fundamental units of the metric system (SI). 3.choose the appropriate unit of measurement. 4.know the prefixes commonly used in working with the metric system (SI). 5.be able to convert to and from the unit to the prefixes the using the factor label method.

Metric Activities The student will: measure various object and volumes using the appropriate metric (SI) measurement tool. read the section in the text on measurements. read the handout Metrics the Easy Way. compute the problems on the metric problem handout. discuss the importance of knowing the metric system. (SI) system. (SI)

Metric Assessment The Student will be graded on the following lesson assignments: 1.Measurement/Volume Lab 2.Metric (SI) worksheets 3.Their note on the discussion using OneNote, 4.Using WebCT, transfer files to and from the teacher 5.A test on the prefixes, fundamental units, and factor-label conversion to and from the unit

1. How will you get the content into your Tablet so you can use the power of digital ink and other Tablet tools? The Student will: be trained in the use of Microsoft OneNote to be used for all their note taking in my class. be trained in the use of Microsoft OneNote to be used for all their note taking in my class. use their stylist to take notes on the content and convert it to text.

2. How will the students receive their portion of the assignment? Each assignment will have the work sheet and the problems to answer in WebCT. The Power Point used in the discussion showing how to work the problems will also be available through WebCT for review.

3. What will the students be doing during the lesson presentation? (Student Engagement) The student will: actively engage by completing the lab and present their results on a whiteboard. observe a Power Point on the Smart Board. take notes on their TabletPCs. retrieve the Metric (SI) worksheet and compute the conversion problems.

4. How will the student portion be submitted to you for evaluation ? The students will: submit their written Metric conversion assignments using the factor label to the instructor by using WebCT. present orally the completed labs using whiteboards. access and submit the test available on WebCT.

5. How will you use the TabletPC to evaluate the student work? The Instructor will: retrieve the students worksheets and tests using WebCT. evaluate their documents using the Inking and annotation capability to make notes and record grades.

6. What will be the strategy to return completed assignments to your students? The Instructor will return the completed student documents with annotations and grade to the students via WebCT. The students will respond to graded lessons and the instructors annotations using WebCT features.

7. Will there be times when the lids will be down on the student computers? Yes, when the instructor is evaluating a process in which the TabletPC has a tool or program that enables the to do the without understanding (i.e. using a metric converter in Encarta to check their answer). when reading an assignment. when doing an in-class written assignment. NO COMPUTER IS PERMITTED IN THE LAB IF THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR A COMPUTER DISASTER.

8. Describe what challenges you see you may have in managing your classroom and what your thoughts would be for handling those. Preventing plagiarism by cut, copy and pasting. Ensuring that the students remain on task and using their stylist to take note and not playing games. Some students may have difficulties using some capabilities of WebCT (Using File). Instructor Response: Random Google search of key phrases. Instructors may develop unique and motivating opportunities for the students and at the same time making them fun and hard to plagiarize. Syncroneyes will be employed to help instructors overcome some management issues.

9. How repeatable is this lesson strategy for lessons you will be teaching? This lesson strategy is easily reproducible and will be utilized frequently because the templates are adaptable for other lessons & assignments. OneNote can be employed to check on note-taking skills and electronically give and receive homework and assignment responses. Ease with which one can make up on line quizzes and tests. All lesson materials can be but into WebCt features such as PowerPoint and Templates for future reference and utilization by the students.

10. Other considerations: WebCts notes could be utilized for a journal Short-answer essays utilizing Encarta (i.e. research origins of the Metric and S.I. system of measurement). Graphing calculator and graphing utilities of TabletPC in class and to analyze data & lab outcomes (i.e. In metricTemp. vs. Time) Individual note-writing on a text section in OneNote or Journal as an outside reading assignment. OneNote or Journal as an outside reading assignment.

10. Other considerations cont 10. Other considerations cont This method of delivery can be designed to meet the needs of all learners such as IEP students, tactile, visual and auditory because of all the technology available. A safe lab environment for the laptops to enable student to utilize lab software and probes such as Venier. The laptop will prove to be a very powerful scientific research tool and enable student to gather data, then analyze it later using powerful graphing software MORE TIME FOR THE STAFF TO DEVELOP EFFECTIVE LESSONS AND ANCILLIARIES WOULD BE BENEFICIAL.
