Multi-cultural Mask Art Project Lesson Plan

Objectives Students will: Become aware of the purposes of masks from many cultures Compare and contrast masks Design a mask using cultural examples for inspiration Integrate planning Exhibit craftsmanship Will critique their work

Procedure Students will: View PowerPoint Internet research of masks Draw mask on sketchpad Prepare clay Add details of facial features Fire clay masks Paint/glaze/details Evaluate/critique

Items to Include : 1. Content will be presented using a PowerPoint presentation/picture examples. Research of masks on Microsoft Publisher and Internet Explorer. Colorful digital ink and pen used to sketch two views of the mask. 2. The students will receive their assignments by watching the PowerPoint presentation/picture examples and by receiving their worksheets, evaluation sheets by going to the teachers assignment site (created from My Documents, public folders, etc.) 3. Students will be taking notes on Microsoft OneNotes in their Tablets. 4. The finished mask will be class critiqued and individually critiqued and graded by the teacher. 5. The critique sheet created in Microsoft Journal will be evaluated/graded by the teacher using the pen and sent back to them. A Discussion Board could also be created. Students will create a PowerPoint or research paper describing their mask, culture, etc.

6. The completed assignment will be returned to the teacher by the assignment site. (Created from My Documents-Public folders, etc.) 7. Yes, the students lids will be down when the students will be working with clay or other materials to create their mask. 8. Some of the challenges for managing the classroom will be helping the students find websites, possibly asking the students who are not working directly with clay or materials, and using their PC Tablets to move to another location within the art room to avoid the mess. 9. This lesson strategy is very repeatable! 10. This Tablet will be a great classroom tool but it will take time to become familiar with all of the software.
