Landforms What are the shapes the land takes and why? WG.4B Describe different landforms and the physical processes that cause their development [SUPPORTING STANDARD]

Which words are you familiar with, and which do you not yet know? Copy and define. MountainsRift ValleysErosion Tectonic Forces DeltaPlateau WeatheringLandformStrait

Mountain – natural elevation of the earth’s surface with steep sides and greater height than a hill. Rift Valleys – tectonic plates pull away from each other causing the land (valley) in between to sink to a lower elevation than that of the other two plates. Erosion – material is removed by wind, water, ice, or gravity. Tectonic Forces – divergent, convergent (collision and subduction), and transform Delta – a triangular area of land formed from deposits at the mouth of a river Plateau – a broad, flat area of land higher than the surrounding land. Weathering – physical and chemical processes that change the characteristics of rock on or near the earth’s surface. Landform – naturally formed features of the surface of the earth. Strait – a narrow channel connecting tow larger bodies of water. CHAPTER 2 PAGE 26 REVIEW, REVIEW, REVIEW

What makes a MOUNTAIN? Converging of tectonic plates

What makes a MOUNTAIN? Converging of tectonic plates Continent to Continent Oceanic to Continent

What makes a PLATEAU? Weathering and Erosion

What makes a TRANSFORM FAULT? Diverging and converging that effects the surface

What makes a RIFT VALLEY? DIVERGING that effects the lithosphere

What makes a CANYON? Weathering and Erosion

What makes a DELTA? Sediment Deposits when river meets ocean, sea, or standing water

Let’s see what we know… Which of the following is NOT a landform caused by climate patterns of South America? F Andes Mountains G Atacama Desert H Amazon Rainforest J Argentine Pampas As a river reaches its mouth, it is often affected by incoming tides, resulting in a landform called a _______? A source B atoll C delta D current

Let’s see what we know… Some spreading plate boundaries lie under continents. In these places, the crust stretches until it breaks forming _________, mainly found in ___________. A abyssal plains, East Asia B rift valleys, West Africa C abyssal plains, West Asia D rift valleys, East Africa Which physical process is responsible for the creation of rift valleys in SubSaharan Africa? F erosion G weathering H tectonic forces J volcanic activity
