What you need to know!

2. IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER!!!!!
FCAT Extended Response questions will include a 14 space box in which you can write your answer.
Any writing outside of the box will not be graded and will not be seen by the graders.
Allow minutes to complete an extended response question.

3. Read the Question
Underline the parts of the question that need to be answered.

4. Extended responses are longer than short responses but are not more difficult if you remain focused and organized.

5. SCORING The FCAT Extended Responses are scored using a 4-point rubric.
A complete and correct answer is worth 4 points.
A partial answer is worth 1, 2 or 3 points.

6. Writing a “4 point” Response Does your response……..
1. Answer the question?
2. Give necessary information?
3. Use text-based key words and phrases?
4. Give many supporting details?

7. Answer the question?
Does the response clearly answer the question that was asked?
Does the response answer all parts of the question?

8. Give necessary information?
Is the response complete?
Does it include the information—every detail and example—that is needed?
Does it include only information that is needed?

9. Use text-based key words and phrases?
Is the response directly and accurately based on the passage?
Can you point to the words and sentences in the passage that support the answer?

10. Give many supporting details?
Are the details and examples specific?
Are they clear and meaningful?
Did you include many types of details?

11. SAMPLE QUESTION Using the passage “Zoo” by Edward D. Hoch.
Question: (INFERENCE) Explain what Professor Hugo was probably telling the horse-spider creatures while citizens of Earth were viewing them? Use specific details and information in the text to support your response.

12. 4 Point Response
A top-score response will include at least three or four text-based examples of something the professor would most likely say to the creatures from Kaan and will provide text-based support for that response using KEY Words or Terms. The response answers the question that was asked and is written with good organization.

13. Example of a Top-Score Response. Score= 4 Points
Professor Hugo was probably saying some of the same things to the creatures that he had been saying to the people on Earth. He was probably telling the Kaan people, as they watched with awe, that they were seeing the strange, two-legged creatures called Earthlings. He might also have told them not to worry because the bars would protect them from the Earthlings. He also must have collected some form of money from them that is about the same as one dollar Professor Hugo would have told them to tell their friends when they got home and reminded them to return next year on this same date to see the strange Interplanetary Zoo creatures who were kept in barred cages.

14. 3, 2, 1 Point Responses
would be missing any one, two or three of these requirements.

Responses must be legible and not written in too large handwriting.

15. Rubric for Extended-Response Questions
4 points
The response indicates that the student has a thorough understanding of the reading concept embodied in the task. The student has provided a response that is accurate, complete, and fulfills all the requirements of the task. Necessary support and/or examples are included, and the information is clearly text-based.

16. 3 points
The response indicates that the student has an understanding of the reading concept embodied in the task. The student has provided a response that is accurate and fulfills all the requirements of the task, but the required support and/or details are not complete or clearly text-based.

17. 2 points
The response indicates that the student has a partial understanding of the reading concept embodied in the task. The student has provided a response that includes information that is essentially correct and text-based, but the information is too general or too simplistic. Some of the support and/or examples and requirements of the task may be incomplete or omitted.

18. 1 point
The response indicates that the student has very limited understanding of the reading concept embodied in the task. The response is incomplete, may exhibit many flaws, and may not address all requirements of the task.

19. 0 points
The response indicates that the student does not demonstrate an understanding of the reading concept embodied in the task. The student has provided a response that is inaccurate; the response has an insufficient amount of information to determine the student’s understanding of the task; or the student has failed to respond to the task.
