© Crown copyright Met Office WIS - The WMO Information System WMO has been working for several years on upgrading its global infrastructure to support all of its international programmes of work, both operational and research-based, to collect, share and disseminate information. The new infrastructure is called the WMO Information System, and identifies three top level functions. These are: GISC: Global Information System Centre. DCPC: Data Collection and Production Centre. NC: National Centre. GISCs have a key role in the WIS to hold and distribute copies for at least 24 hours of current WMO data and products intended for global distribution, in addition to disseminating information from NCs and DCPCs within their area of responsibility. GISCs also host a Discovery, Access and Retrieval (DAR) facility. The DAR facility will allow users of the WIS to find data and products, and services, globally by searching a comprehensive catalogue using subject keywords, geographic extent, or temporal range. The user can choose from a set of catalogue records describing relevant items. Once the user's authorization to receive the data or product is checked, the WIS would facilitate delivery through any of a broad range of online and offline options, including subscription services.

© Crown copyright Met Office vGISC For the last two years the Met Office and Météo-France have been collaborating on a project that will deliver a virtual GISC for Western Europe. vGISC will meet all the WMO requirements of a GISC and will allow the Met Office and Météo-France to provide a shared GISC functionality between them. vGISC will also enable each centre to act as a backup to the other centre, providing enhanced resilience. This solution was demonstrated at the Commission for Basic Systems (CBS) session held in Windhoek, Namibia in November 2010, and passed WMO Audit in May 2011. Following comprehensive testing at Toulouse and Exeter, the vGISC was declared operational at the WMO Congress in June 2012. Catalogue functions OK: DAR Discovery, Access, Retrieval, harvesting & synchronization Cache functions: difficulty with security architecture delayed contractual acceptance
