: FCCN's Possible Contributions Rute Sofia/Carlos Friaças {rsofia,cfriacas}@fccn.pt Brussels September 2003

{rsofia,cfriacas}@fccn.pt IPv6 in Portugal  1994: researching in IPv6 issues (University of Lisbon; University of Coimbra)  1996: University of Lisbon, one of the first pseudo-TLAs in 6BONE; one of the first Linux IPv6 stacks implemented at Univ. Lisbon (Pedro Roque) References: Internet Protocol Journal, 6BONE History Linux IPv6 Howto, 2.2 History of IPv6 in Linux

{rsofia,cfriacas}@fccn.pt FCCN  Portuguese NREN, started to operate in 1987  Manages RCTS, the Portuguese Research and Education Network (which includes 12K schools and libraries)  ccTLD.pt – http://www.dns.pthttp://www.dns.pt  Manages Gigapix – The Portuguese IXP (since 1995)  Involved in IPv6 deployment for 5 years  Coordinates the Portuguese IPv6 Task-Force  URL: http://www.fccn.pt/

{rsofia,cfriacas}@fccn.pt FCCN and IPv6  2002: Native IPv6 (E1) between RCTS and RNP, Brazil  2003: GIGAPIX [The Portuguese Internet eXchange Point]  March: Started with FCCN, Vodafone and Telepac  Now: 20 members, 5 of which IPv4/IPv6  2003: RCTS backbone IS dual-stack  3rd NREN to connect natively to GEANT (following Renater and Rediris)  Intra-AS: IS-IS and OSPFv3 (not everywhere);  Topology: two-stars (Lisbon and Oporto); IPv6 tunneling gateways in both spots provide IPv6 connectivity.

FCCN & 6NET  WHY: improve current IPv6 services and RCTS infrastructure  Our offer : NREN experience in IPv6 deployment  Contributions  Workgroups WP2, WP3, WP5

{rsofia,cfriacas}@fccn.pt WP2  Activities  2.2. Investigate IPv4 to IPv6 transition for NRENs  2.3 Investigate IPv4 to IPv6 transition for site (Universities) networks  FCCN's contribution:  Update of D.2.2.3; provide information about our current IPv6 deployment (similarly to other NRENs)  Contribute to the testing of transition mechanisms, e.g., 6to4

{rsofia,cfriacas}@fccn.pt WP3  Activities  3.2., DNS and DHCP  DNS testing (milestone M3.3)  FCCN's contribution  Detailing our DNS experience in RCTS  Experience as ccTLD.pt  Contribute to the testing of DNS solutions

{rsofia,cfriacas}@fccn.pt WP5  Activities  GGF involvement  Streaming application testing  FCCN's contribution  Currently, finishing a GGF informational draft on IPv4 dependencies of GGF specifications (deadline Sep. 19th)  Contribute to the testing of streaming applications, e.g., Gnomemeeting, VOCAL

{rsofia,cfriacas}@fccn.pt Current Situation  Officially, not in 6NET yet  No equipment, no circuits, no funding acknowledged  Questions  Contributions make sense in current context?  Can we propose tasks, e.g., for WP5, testing of some other applications?  How/when can we have access to the 6NET infrastructure?

{rsofia,cfriacas}@fccn.pt Thank You! for your attention
