Physical Adjustments Vaginal discharge called lochia. This is a normal discharge of blood, tissue, and mucus ( which occurs for several weeks after birth) The uterus is cleaning itself out During first few weeks mother perspires more and goes to the bathroom alot. Uterus slowly shrinks. As uterus shrinks so does the stomach

Women who had an episiotomy may experience some physical discomfort as they sit and stand.

Medical checkup About 4-6 weeks after birth mother has a postnatal Rest and sleep Proper nutrition Fluids Weight loss An exercise plan Some women still look 4 or 5 months pregnant directly after giving birth.

Emotional Adjustments New parents may be surprised by conflicting emotions when the new baby arrives. They may be excited to have the baby, yet anxious about all the responsibilities. These mixed emotions are normal

Mother’s Emotions Sometimes a mother’s emotions are unsteady directly following a birth Postpartum blues: are the moodiness, anxiety, depression, and possibly anger sometimes felt by a woman who has recently given birth. The feelings may surface as early as a few days after the baby is born or several weeks later.

Moods may come on without warning and for no reason. The mood change is puzzling and frustrating to the new mother and father. About 80% of all mothers experience at least some postpartum blues. Most mothers postpartum blues disappear within a few weeks without any treatment. By getting proper rest and help a new mother might even avoid the blues

Postpartum Depression About 20% of new moms have a more serious form of postpartum blues, which prevents them from giving their infants good care.

In addition to the above symptoms, these mothers may feel guilt, despair, and detachment. Their self- esteem and self-confidence drop dramatically A women in this state should seek professional help.
