Dermis Composed of dense connective tissue The Dermis is strong and stretchy (elastic) Leather goods are made from the dermis of animals. The dermis is composed of two layers The papillary layer, located just under the stratum basale. The folds and loops of the papillary layer gives you fingerprints! Skin Color Three things can contribute to skin color 1. The pigment Melanin. The more you make the darker you are. 1. The pigment Melanin. The more you make the darker you are. 2. Skin colors have meaning! Redness (erythema): Embarrassment, fever, hyperyension, inflammation, allergy

Pallor (blanching) – Skin becomes pale. Caused by anger, fear, anemia, low blood pressure, impaired blood flow

Jaundice – a yellow cast, caused by the liver producing too much bile. Common in infants

Bruising (hemotomas)– Black or blue marks that show where blood has escaped from the circulatory system and clotted in the tissues. May signify low Vitamin C or hemophilia
