How to Conduct a Waste Assessment
3
“We came to this workshop because we care about…. n n safety of our employees n n improving bottom-line profits n n protecting the environment n n compliance with environmental regulations
4
How much do you spend on environmental management?
5
“If we don’t know what our environmental expenses are, it will be very difficult to reduce and eliminate them”
6
Environmental Expenses n n Tangible n n Intangible
7
Tangible Environmental Expenses n n Off-site hazardous waste transporting n n Landfill fees n n On-site waste water pretreatment n n On-site monitoring and testing
8
Intangible Environmental Expenses n n Fines and penalties n n Company image n n Legal staff n n Marketing of byproducts n n Training expenses n n Labor - in-house and consulting n n Environmental supplies - drums, spill kits
9
Intangible Environmental Expenses n n Waste storage - dikes, shelters, containers n n Recycling equipment - bailers, bins, cartons n n Disposal - Out of date raw materials n n Control equipment - scrubbers, filter presses n n Personal protective equipment - gloves, respirators, boots, and aprons related to waste management
10
Environmental Accounting n n Creates a greater awareness about the wastes generated in our processes
11
Objectives of a Waste Assessment n Determine... - General types of waste - Quantity / volumes of each waste type - Quantity / volumes of each waste type n Identify... - Sources, processes, and procedures that - Sources, processes, and procedures that contribute to waste generation contribute to waste generation
12
Waste Assessment Allows us to take a closer look at exactly how our operations impact the environment
13
Environmental Impacts Positive n n Recycling n n Water Conservation n n Natural Resource Conservation (less energy use) Negative n n Landfill Use n n Air Pollutants n n Hazardous Waste Generation
14
Steps to Conducting a Waste Assessment n Schedule a meeting with key personnel. n Analyze background information & flow diagrams. n Conduct a pre-assessment meeting. n Conduct a facility walk-through. n Identify waste reduction opportunities. n Conduct a follow-up meeting. n Prepare a waste assessment report.
15
Schedule a Meeting with Key Personnel n Establish Commitment n Set the agenda to meet your goals and objectives. n Build a partnership. n Select a waste assessment team.
16
Team Selection n n Production n n Maintenance n n Quality Control n n Process Engineering n n Purchasing n n Human Resources n n Environmental
17
Analyze Background Information and Flow Diagrams n Waste types, volumes, and disposal costs n Written procedures for waste handling n Current waste reduction activities n Purchasing records and specifications n Process quality control data n Process flow diagrams
18
Process Flow Diagram Painting Inspection Packaging Receiving
19
Pre-Assessment Meeting n n Fill in gaps in the background information. n n Discuss current waste reduction efforts. n n Get a sound understanding of the process prior to the facility walk-through.
20
Conduct a Facility Walk-Through n Follow the process flow diagram. n Look for sources of waste and opportunities to eliminate, reduce, reuse, or recycle. n Observe both normal operations and sporadic events such as cleanup and product changes. n Ask questions.
21
Key Questions n What type of waste is it? n Where did it come from? n How much of it is there? n How much do you pay to get rid of it? n If it’s raw material, how much did you pay for it? n Is it possible to reduce or eliminate it?
22
Perform a Mass Balance Materials In = Materials Out n Go back to the process flow diagram. n Move from process to process. n Identify all inputs and outputs. n Determine waste volumes and costs. n List waste reduction options.
23
Perform a Mass Balance Inputs Inputs n Paint n Unpainted Parts n Energy n Solvents n Rags n Air Filters Outputs Outputs n Painted Parts n Empty Drums n Air Emissions n Waste Solvent n Waste Paint n Soiled Rags n Used Air Filters Painting Process
24
Conduct a Follow-Up Meeting n Discuss initial findings of the waste assessment. n Review the next steps.
25
Prepare a Waste Assessment Report n Summarize background information. n Review waste generation and existing methods of waste management. n List waste reduction opportunities. n Include an economic assessment of current and proposed activities.
26
Evaluate Waste Reduction Options n Occupational Impacts n Initial Cost n Operating Cost n Savings n Environmental Impacts n Production Shutdown Requirements n Productivity n Impact on Quality n Energy Requirements n Facility Modifications n Maintenance Requirements
