DOCUMENT #:GSC15-PLEN-90 FOR:Presentation SOURCE:TIA AGENDA ITEM:6.8 CONTACT(S): Anil Kripalani (akripalani@wirefreecom.net) Cheryl Blum (cblum@tiaonline.org) ICT and the Environment Anil Kripalani Wirefreecom Global Standards Collaboration (GSC) GSC-15

TIA’s ‘Green’ Drive Environmental Regulatory Tracking 2 Tracking and analyzing environmental regulations worldwide TIA’s Green Initiative includes an Environmental Intelligence Analysis service, EIATRACK, which monitors, translates and analyzes product-oriented legislation and regulation worldwide. The service covers:  RoHS – Restriction of Hazardous Substances  WEEE – Waste of Electronic and Electrical Equipment  REACH – Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemical Substances  EuP - Energy using Products  DfE - Design for the Environment  Energy Efficiency  Packaging and Labeling

TIA’s ‘Green’ Drive Market Intelligence – Green Addendum  TIA produces annual ICT Market Review & Forecast  New ICT Green Addendum gives trends, stats and facts on current environmental issues  Forecasts future directions  Provides ICT industry business case for going green  ICT Market Review & Forecast available now online and in limited print quantities  www.tiaonline.org/market_intelligence/

TIA’s ‘Green’ Drive ICT Green Virtual Event  The Sustainability Virtual Summit in March 2010 Many companies participated and received qualified leads as a result of the summit  TIA ICT Green Boot Camp held on March 18, 2010 Featured interactive panel discussions on green design and market access, policy and the low-carbon economy and business opportunities in Green ICT

TIA’s ‘Green’ Drive e-cyclingcentral.com TIA’s E-cycling Central Website maintains information for consumers and businesses on recycling centers in their region that accept electronics

TIA’s ‘Green’ Drive Policy Focus  Green Briefing on Capitol Hill Planned for the fall of 2010  Green ICT Policy News (under development) Weekly update on policy activities related to open proceedings, dockets, and activities in DC

TIA’s ‘Green’ Drive Standards Development  3GPP2 - on-going development of S.P0140 Study for Green Technology Initiative for cdma2000 ® Wireless Networks and S.P0141 Study for M2M Communications for cdma2000 ® Wireless Networks  These Technical Reports will be transposed by TR-45 into TIA TSBs.

TIA’s ‘Green’ Drive Standards Development  TIA-942 Telecommunications Infrastructure Standard for Data Centers  TIA-942 Addendum 2 – published March 2010 Expansion of temperature and humidity ranges will allow for lower power consumption and reduction of HVAC capacity.  The scope of subcommittee TR-42.3 (Pathways and Spaces) relates to CSI MasterFormat™ divisions 1- 10. A task group has been established to consider new “green” projects.

TIA’s ‘Green’ Drive Standards Development  TIA is developing an access agnostic set of M2M protocols in Committee TR-50 which can be used for smart grid devices.  TIA is developing a standard for immunity to voltage surges that smart grid equipment may encounter as a result of lightning strikes.

Challenges  Continue to identify, analyze and inform TIA stakeholders of environmental issues and regulations as they relate to current and future directions in the global market. 10

Next Steps/Actions  Continued focus on development of standards (e.g., Smart Grid, M2M, Data Centers) to support technologies, projects and features relative to energy efficiencies and green environment 11
