Look up and Define words out of Chapter 4 & 5. Voc/Chapter Test on Thursday.  Biomass  Ecological Pyramid  Precipitation  Transpiration  Condensation  Evaporation  Photosynthesis  Respiration  Amino Acids  Legume

I. The sun provides the heat energy required for the cycle to continue. II. The oceans and rivers are the main reservoirs of water. Evaporation - Water evaporates into the atmosphere. Condensation - Water condenses into droplets in the clouds. Precipitation - As the water droplets in clouds enlarge, water falls to earth in the form of rain, snow or hail. Transpiration - Water is lost through the leaves of plants ('trees perspiring').

1. How does the volcano effect the water cycle? 2. What energy source drives the water cycle? 3. What could be harmful to the water cycle? (min. 3 items) 4. How does the runoff effect the water cycle? 5. List 3 benefits of the water cycle

 Carbon occurs in all living organisms in the forms of carbon dioxide, carbohydrates (sugars and starches), proteins and fats.  Oxygen occurs in all living organisms in the forms of oxygen gas, water, carbon dioxide, carbohydrates, proteins and fats.  Photosynthesis - Photosynthesis is the process used by plants to make food. Carbon Dioxide + Water Glucose Sugar + Oxygen CO 2 H 2 O C 6 H 12 O 6 O 2  Respiration - Respiration is the process that most living organisms use to obtain energy. Glucose + Oxygen Carbon Dioxide + Water C 6 H 12 O 6 O 2 CO 2 H 2 O

Carbon Cycle Igneous Rocks Marine sediments Magma Sedimentary Rocks Fossil Fuel Emissions

Makes up 78% of troposphere and is required by organisms to make amino acids. Continuous cycling of N maintains healthy soils. Crop rotation- human influence to alternative nitrogen fixing crops. Nitrogen oxide produced by combustion of fuels, combine with water vapor to form droplets of acid in smog. It combines with ozone and damages vegetation, kills trees and irritates lungs

1. How does the volcano effect the nitrogen cycle? 2. What energy source drives the nitrogen cycle? 3. What could be harmful to the nitrogen cycle? (min. 3 items) 4. How does the runoff effect the nitrogen cycle? 5. List 3 benefits of the nitrogen cycle. Nitrogen Cycle Questions

The combination of three factors makes phosphorus a nutrient of concern in most ecosystems: 1. Most soils have only small amounts from the weathering of rocks. 2. Phosphorus is more insoluble(can’t move through water easily)than other nutrients. 3. Phosphorus that drains from the land to the ocean is used by organisms in the surface waters. Some is lost to the sediments in the shells and bones of marine organisms.
