966: Duke Meszko I became Poland’s first recorded leader 1100: after Meszko’s death, Boleslaw Kryzwousty divides Poland among his sons causing rivalry 1320: the Polish state is reunified 1333-1370: Political and cultural unity is achieved under rule of Kazimierz III

Jadwiga marries Duke Jagiello, forming an alliance with Lithuania Jagiello rules from 1386-1434 1596: the capital is moved to Warsaw 1700s: Russia, Prussia and Austria split Poland 1890s: approximately 4 million people emigrate to the US

Poland becomes the main fighting ground. There was no official Polish state and there was no Polish army. Poles were forced into the Russian, German, and Austrian armies and forced to fight against one another. 1918: Poland becomes independent as WWI comes to an end. 1997: National Assembly adopts a new Constitution
