2  966: Duke Meszko I became Poland’s first recorded leader  1100: after Meszko’s death, Boleslaw Kryzwousty divides Poland among his sons causing rivalry  1320: the Polish state is reunified  1333-1370: Political and cultural unity is achieved under rule of Kazimierz III

3  Jadwiga marries Duke Jagiello, forming an alliance with Lithuania  Jagiello rules from 1386-1434  1596: the capital is moved to Warsaw  1700s: Russia, Prussia and Austria split Poland  1890s: approximately 4 million people emigrate to the US

4  Poland becomes the main fighting ground.  There was no official Polish state and there was no Polish army.  Poles were forced into the Russian, German, and Austrian armies and forced to fight against one another.  1918: Poland becomes independent as WWI comes to an end.  1997: National Assembly adopts a new Constitution
