4
Why do we have to do something different?
Hoisting Systems Why do we have to do something different?
5
Drilling History Offshore drilling started in the early 60’?
Each new generation rigs conquered deeper waters Bluewater 1 – 1962 (
6
Drilling History Hoisting Capacity
Increased from below 500 shT to 1250 shT Next step will be 1500 – 2000 shT Drillstring Compensation Increased from below 500 to 1500 kips Next step probably 2000 – 2500 kips
7
What has been done to meet the requirement?
Hoisting System Increased from 8 to 16 falls Added power Drillstring Compensation Stronger steel structures Larger cylinders
8
What are the consequences?
Hoisting System Increased friction due to number of sheaves. 16 fall system has 15 – 18% loss Increased inertia in the system Increased drill line (2 1/8” ++) Reduced hoisting speed Drillstring Compensation Increased weight on Top Mounted Compensator affects the overall VCG
9
Direct Acting Hoisting System
Multiple wires on single layer winch drum Wires routed via sheaves in derrick top directly to the Top Drive
10
Direct Acting Hoisting System
Increased safety using multiple wires No Cut & Slip Reach 20% higher speed in half the time with the same power input At low weights, the energy consumption is 60 – 70% of a drawwork system with same capacity Drillstring Compensator equipment accessible using rig crane Lower VCG
11
Direct Acting Hoisting System
Higher level of safety Increased operational time More efficient Increased VDL The improved efficiency can be used to either increasing the operational speed or reduce the required power input
