Topographic Maps Obj- 7. Describe how contour lines and contour intervals are used to show elevation on topographic maps 8. List the 5 rules of topographic maps
2
What do Topographic Maps Do?
Indicate relief of an area 3-D visualization (ups and downs)
3
Contours Show elevation above sea level
Connect points of equal elevation Indicate change in vertical distance
4
Contour Interval The change in elevation between adjacent contour lines Index contours are the lines that are numbered Large contour interval-Steep relief (hills mountains) Small intervals-Gentle relief
5
Hachures Short lines at right angles to contour lines used to show depressions
6
5 Rules of Topographic Maps
1 Contour lines connect points of equal elevation 2 Contour lines never cross or join contour lines of different elevation
7
5 Rules of Topographic Maps
3- Contour lines close or join around hills, depressions, or basins. (If not they extend to the edge of the map) 4- Contour lines form v’s that point upstream when they cross streams 5- Contour lines are closely spaced in steep areas, and far apart in flat areas
