Antarctic Protection  1961 - Antarctic Treaty comes into force  1991 - The Madrid Protocol is added to the Treaty  2041 - The Madrid Protocol and moratorium on mining and drilling in Antarctica will be reviewed  2012 – “World Summit for Sustainable Development” – negotiations will begin

7 Antarctica Facts  Antarctica is the coldest, windiest and driest continent, with the highest average altitude  Antarctica contains 90%of all the world's ice and 70% of all the world's fresh water  Antarctica has no government and belongs to no country  Less than approximately 350,000 people have set foot on the continent The last un-spoilt wilderness on the Earth

8 What’s wrong with this picture?  Over 80% of glaciers are receding  Flow rate of glaciers has increased 12% over the last 10 years  Recent collapse of major ice shelves (Larsen B in 2002, Wilkins in 2008)  Decrease in krill abundance in the Peninsula area  Air temperature has increased by 3˚C in the past 50 years
