Objective Energy is transferred to living things through the food they eat. Student knows examples of living things that are: producers, consumers, carnivores, herbivores, & omnivores. GLE: Students explain how plants & animals interact. Students understand how animals depend on plants for survival (food, shelter and oxygen).

Producer A living thing that makes its own food Mostly green plants Connection (like produce section of the grocery store)

Consumer Living things that eat food Examples of consumers are sharks, tigers, and people.

Three Types of Consumers Herbivore: plant eater Carnivore: meat eater Omnivore: eats all things

Prey Any animal that is hunted by others as food.

Predator A consumer that hunts other animals as food.

Food Chain The movement of energy from one type of living thing to another.

Food Web The flow of energy between food chains which ties a community together. plants birds meat fish Man
